Capri Landi Artist Statement:

In Phases is a body of work I’ve developed over the past six years, a visual meditation on cycles, change, and emotional transformation. Growing up in Chicago, the long gray winters and overcast skies deeply influenced me, heightening my sensitivity to atmosphere and light, and instilling a lingering, winter-like melancholy. After moving to the Southwest, I found deep inspiration in the Sonoran Desert’s open skies, organic forms, and quiet color palette. Places like Papago Park, with its curved lines, sculptural rock formations, and grounding energy, continue to inform my visual language.

Painting is my way of processing, of listening inward. Using transparent layers of acrylic and watercolor, I build fields of color that feel like inner landscapes where I can reflect on the subtle rhythms of life. This work is rooted in lunar cycles and a desire to create calm, connection, and pause.

I’ve been teaching visual art to high school students in the Phoenix area since 2003, a calling that has shaped not just my career, but the way I think about creativity as healing. I earned my bachelor’s degree at Columbia College Chicago, where I developed a strong foundation in fine arts and design principles, with an emphasis on conceptual development and material exploration. I also hold a master’s degree in Educational Leadership from Arizona State University, which has deepened my commitment to fostering inclusive and transformative learning environments. These academic experiences have informed both my teaching philosophy and my approach to artmaking, grounding my studio practice in intentionality and emotional resonance. My paintings are emotionally driven, exploring layers of grief, love, joy, and renewal. My influences are artists like Agnes Pelton and Etel Adnan who remind me of the quiet power of feminine energy and the beauty of the in-between.

In Phases invites you into that space—the shifting boundary between the external world and the internal self. As a proud Sun Devil, I’m honored to share this body of work at ASU’s Vault Gallery.
