Dr. Jeffrey Shuren
Former director, FDA Center for Devices and Radiological Health

Jeffrey Shuren was the director of the Center for Devices and Radiological Health at the United States Food and Drug Administration from September 2009 to July 2024.

Shuren was responsible for the development of Medicare national coverage determinations for drugs, biologics and non-implantable devices, while director of the Division of Items and Devices, Coverage and Analysis Group at the Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services.

David Steury, health policy director, Office of Congresswoman Diana DeGette (D-CO)

Steury will discuss Rep. Diana DeGette’s signature legislation, the 21st Century CURES Act, and plans for Cures 2.0. Both of these bills aim to speed development and coverage of novel health care treatments, including diagnostics. Steury will also speak about the current work of the U.S. House Committee on Energy and Commerce Subcommittee on Health.

This session will explore the progress of new technologies (AI, digital health, including proteomics and spatialomics, etc.) not only in driving precision medicine forward and expanding access to testing but even influencing epidemiological characteristics of patient populations. What other vectors can expand the reach of diagnostics? What still needs to be accomplished to fully realize the benefits of testing access for all, improved diagnostic accuracy, patient compliance and cost efficiencies? Challenges such as data interoperability, awareness and reimbursement as well as proposed solutions for each challenge will be highlighted.

This session will focus on how leading companies build and retain the highest-quality teams to meet their current and future business demands. They will discuss the impact of new technologies including AI and automation and the importance of employers staying in tune with these trends. Panel will discuss current talent shortages, as well as best practices in recruitment, retention, training and leadership development. Labcorp and InStride will share their recently announced workforce development model as one example of innovating to maximize human resource potential and train the next generation in labs worldwide.

Year in review and next steps

The last year was an active one for the diagnostics industry, marked by regulatory shifts, technological advances and select investment rebounds. Many hurdles and uncertainties remain, particularly in the areas of reimbursement, the utility of AI and regulatory processes. However, the sector’s growth opportunities are promising. Diagnostics are playing an increasingly central role in precision medicine, home health care and AI-driven clinical decision-making. During this session, Aspinall will highlight the financial and investment landscape, regulatory and reimbursement developments, market and technology evolution, and hurdles and opportunities for future growth.
